48 hours in Athens
Jon and I made it home safe and sound after spending 2 amazing weeks in Greece. I’ve been dying to see Greece since I was in college, so it was a dream come true. This is my first installment of our trip, so gear up for lots of future posts.
Falling in love with Athens came at a surprise to me, since we honestly didn’t hear great things about the city beforehand. However, a few minutes into walking around the Acropolis and the Plaka I was so taken away by the history and the beauty of all the pastel colored buildings. There was a good amount of graffiti, but I found it to be kinda cool.
The Acropolis was busy and so beautiful, filled with lots of happy people, restaurants and shops. We didn’t actually make it all the way up to the Parthenon, because it was so hot that day. Jon and I spent all afternoon one day walking around just exploring the area.
We also checked out the New Acropolis Museum, since almost everyone we met said we had to. We found the museum to be so cool and because of it’s modest size it made us feel like we could see everything in a couple hours. It also had this awesome rooftop with pretty views of the Acropolis.
We spent our last night in Greece at the Coco-mat Hotel, which doubles up as a trendy home goods store (they also have a NYC location). We absolutely loved it and would recommend it – the bed and pillows were SO comfortable.
The National Garden was also surprisingly lovely. We didn’t actually have plans to check it out, but we were hiding from the hot sun that day. Orange trees lined the streets and the overgrown trees created the perfect shade for people to read and hang out with friends. The walkways were narrow and went in a million different directions, so naturally we got lost.
OTHER TRIP HIGHLIGHTS / THOUGHTS
- Our first authentic Greek meal (gyros… obviously) at Smile Restaurant was SO good.
- We tried Greek donuts for the first time. I love the way they add honey to them instead of frosting.
- When we were exploring the National Garden, we ran into a tiny zoo. I got too feed baby goats!
